Songwriters set out to create a song with what is known as a "universal appeal." What causes a song to have universal appeal? Singer/Songwriter Cat Stevens answered this question in 1970 with his masterpiece "Father and Son". Originally written for a project depicting a Russian son's desire to join the Revolution against his father's wishes, the song became known as the anthem of a generation in its depiction of the age-old struggle between a parent and their adolescent child.
