Judge: US House candidate can say he was astronaut

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? A congressional candidate in California's Central Valley can note on ballots that he used to be an astronaut.

A Sacramento County judge ruled Thursday that Democrat Jose Hernandez can use the ballot designation "astronaut." Hernandez is challenging freshman Rep. Jeff Denham, a Republican from Turlock, for California's 10th District seat.

A Sacramento law firm had argued in a lawsuit that Hernandez's use of the moniker would violate state elections law because Hernandez has left NASA. Hernandez had flown aboard the shuttle Discovery in 2009.

The Sacramento Bee reports (http://bit.ly/H3yHKG ) that Superior Court Judge Lloyd Connelly ruled that ballot designations apparently can reflect a profession or vocation held during the previous calendar year. Hernandez spent two weeks at NASA in 2011 before leaving the agency.

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. -- Rick Santorum has a message for the people of Wisconsin: This bud's for you.

A steel-town-raised Pennsylvania conservative Catholic, Santorum spent Friday making the case that he's simply the most relatable candidate to the Badger State voters who will head to the polls on Tuesday. That includes bowling jaunts, fish fries, campaign rallies in neighborhood bars, and --- yes -- a shoutout to the occasional "alcoholic beverage."

"The traditions and the culture [were] not that different," he told voters in Eau Claire of his upbringing compared to the lifestyles of Wisconsin voters. "My dad bowled in a bowling league, and we had alcoholic beverages at home!"

"Not that you guys drink and bowl a lot, no offense," he joked at one point, winning giggles and applause.

Santorum's references to the cultural connoisseurship of booze, along with critiques on the finer points of cheese curds and shoutouts to Lambeau Field's charms, come alongside his urging for voters not to "settle" on Mitt Romney, a "CEO-in-chief" candidate who he says can't relate to regular folks.

"We need someone who can talk and relate to folks who are out there batting in this economy feeling like they're swimming alone," he said. "Someone who can relate to them, who maybe doesn't talk about being the CEO of a company and having, you know, jokes about firing people."

Romney, a Mormon, does not drink alcohol.?

Santorum later told reporters that his embrace of a cold one or two was simply a description of his upbringing, not an effort to jab at any of his opponents.

"I'm not trying to draw any contrast,? he said after a rally at a Pabst Blue Ribbon sign-festooned tiki bar in Chippewa Falls. "I'm just telling people a little bit about me and my background and you know what I did growing up."

The son of an Italian immigrant, Santorum added that drinking wine with dinner was a cultural habit in his youth, and he hinted that the effects of excessive imbibing were only clear to him later in life.

"Growing up in an Italian family, wine was a food as far as you're concerned. I didn't think of it as anything else until, well, later on and then we won't get into that," he joked.

Tortilla Factory Owner Arrested Over Business Practices

The owner of a Brooklyn tortilla factory where a worker died after falling into a mixing machine has been arrested on charges of underpaying employees, falsifying business records and violating workers? compensation and unemployment insurance laws, the authorities said on Wednesday.

The owner, Erasmo Ponce, faces 26 felony counts and 23 misdemeanor counts, according to a complaint filed in Brooklyn Criminal Court by Eric T. Schneiderman, the state?s attorney general. Mr. Ponce surrendered to the authorities on Tuesday and was arraigned and released without bail, his lawyer said.

Mr. Ponce, a Mexican immigrant, declined to comment on the charges, but his lawyer, Manuel Portela, said he did not think the case merited criminal prosecution.

?We?ve been trying to resolve this case on an administrative level,? Mr. Portela said, adding that his client ?wants to resolve it and move forward in a way that is fair and equitable.?

Mr. Ponce?s company, Tortilleria Chinantla, has been operating under the investigative glare of state and federal officials since Jan. 24, 2011, when Juan Baten, a Guatemalan worker at his tortilla factory in Bushwick, died after falling into a large machine used to mix tortilla dough. Mr. Baten was crushed in the machine?s churning mechanism.

Several days later, state officials shut down the factory after discovering that the company had been operating without workers? compensation insurance for nearly a year.

The state eventually allowed the factory to reopen, but in July 2011, the federal government cited the company for workplace safety violations carrying fines of more than $62,000. The most serious violation, deemed ?willful,? involved the failure of the company to install a barrier on the mixer to prevent employees from coming into contact with its fast-moving machinery.

Ted Fitzgerald, a spokesman for the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which conducted that investigation, said Wednesday that the tortilla company had contested the citations and penalties and that the case was still pending.

Mr. Baten?s death and the ensuing investigations have darkened the reputation of Mr. Ponce, whose life had followed the classic trajectory of the striving, up-by-the-bootstraps immigrant.

Mr. Ponce was poor when he moved to the United States from Mexico in 1989 and, after a few years of doing manual labor and saving money, he started a small tortilla-making vending business in New York. Within a decade the company grew into a national enterprise with revenue of several million dollars a year.

His success made him one of the wealthiest and most influential members of the city?s growing Mexican diaspora, and he burnished his reputation by donating to various social and political causes in the New York region and in Mexico.

While he declined to speak on Wednesday about the new set of charges against him, Mr. Ponce chatted enthusiastically about a ceremony he was hosting on Saturday to christen a new mural on his factory?s facade. It depicts a workers laboring in a cornfield, he said, and has been popular with the neighbors.

?I am working well with the community,? he said.

How conservatives lost faith in science

How do liberals and conservatives differ in their attitudes toward science? Statistics indicate that conservatives' confidence in science as an institution has declined dramatically since 1974.

An analysis of 36 years' worth of polling data indicates that confidence in science as an institution has steadily declined among Americans who consider themselves conservatives, while confidence levels have been at steadier levels for other ideological groups.

The study, published in the April issue of the American Sociological Review, provides fresh ammunition for those who complain that conservative views on issues such as climate change are at odds with the scientific consensus.

"You can see this distrust in science among conservatives reflected in the current Republican primary campaign," Gordon Gauchat. a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Sheps Center for Health Services Research, said in a news release from the American Sociological Association. "When people want to define themselves as conservatives relative to moderates and liberals, you often hear them raising questions about the validity of global warming and evolution, and talking about how 'intellectual elites' and scientists don't necessarily have the whole truth."

It's not clear how much impact Gauchat's study will have on the debate over politics and science: Liberals are likely to see it as confirmation of what they already believe, while conservatives who are skeptical about the scientific elite are likely to greet the scientific claims with skepticism.

But the analysis represents a serious effort to flesh out political attitudes toward science with real data. Gauchat bases his findings on a statistical analysis of survey results from the General Social Survey, a long-running project that has weighed public confidence in social institutions since 1974. The GSS has been conducted annually or semiannually by the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center, or NORC, with an annual average of 1,500 Americans taking part.

Gauchat cross-referenced attitudes toward the scientific community with various demographic categories, and found that two categories showed a significant erosion of trust in science: conservatives and frequent churchgoers. People who identified themselves as conservatives voiced more confidence in science than moderates or liberals in 1974, but by 2010, that level had fallen by more than 25 percent.

Why the drop? Gauchat suggested that the character of the conservative movement has changed over the past three and a half decades ? and so has the character of the scientific establishment.

"Over the last several decades, there's been an effort among those who define themselves as conservatives to clearly identify what it means to be a conservative," he said. "For whatever reason, this appears to involve opposing science and universities, and what is perceived as the 'liberal culture.' So, self-identified conservatives seem to lump these groups together and rally around the notion that what makes 'us' conservatives is that we don't agree with 'them.'"

Meanwhile, the perception of science's role in society has shifted as well.

"In the past, the scientific community was viewed as concerned primarily with macro structural matters such as winning the space race," Gauchat said. "Today, conservatives perceive the scientific community as more focused on regulatory matters such as stopping industry from producing too much carbon dioxide."

Gauchat's findings run counter to at least one liberal stereotype about conservatives: that right-wingers are distrustful of scientists because they have less education. The figures do support a link between more education and more trust in science, but they also show that more highly educated conservatives are, if anything, more distrustful.

That trend fits best with the concept that "educated or high-information conservatives will hold hyper-opinions about science, because they have a more sophisticated grasp about what types of knowledge will conform with or contradict their ideological positions, and they will prefer to believe what supports their ideology," Gauchat wrote.

So what does this mean for the role of science in setting national policy? "In a political climate in which all sides do not share a basic trust in science, scientific evidence no longer is viewed as a politically neutral factor in judging whether a public policy is good or bad," Gauchat said. Heightened distrust could turn young people away from careers in science and engineering, and in the long run, that could hurt America's standing in a global economy that is becoming increasingly competitive on the technological front.

'The Republican Brain'
Gauchat took on this project to assess the claims made by science journalist Chris Mooney in his 2005 book, "The Republican War on Science" ? and Mooney, who reviewed the paper before publication, said the findings confirmed those claims.

"It's certainly gratifying to see this study come out," Mooney told me. "I appreciate that the author actually undertook to use data. I'm glad I wasn't just whistling in the wind when it came to Republicans and science."

Now Mooney is coming out with another book, titled "The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Don't Believe in Science."

"In the book, I'm really careful to say there's what we call 'nature' and what we call 'nurture,' and you can't explain anything in politics without both of them," he said. "Whenever you see change in a group over time, that's probably 'nurture.'"

Mooney said the factors Gauchat mentioned would fit in the nurture category, along with the GOP's "Southern strategy" to bring what were once traditionally Democratic states into the Republican fold. "This is tapping into the power of nurture, but I also say we've ignored nature for too long," he said.

"You're starting to find things about fixity of belief, desire to have certainty, and you see that these things are also associated with conservatism," he said. "These traits are content-neutral. You could take today's conservatives, stick them in [Soviet] Russia, and they can be very pro-science."

Mooney said people may be born with brains that predispose them either to liberal-leaning traits such as "openness to experience," or conservative-leaning traits such as "conscientiousness."

"The research suggests that people are born with a predisposition, but it's only a predisposition," Mooney said. "'Just born that way' is a phrase that makes me uncomfortable, because it implies some sort of hard wiring. Genes aren't destiny."

If you haven't figured it out by now, Mooney considers himself a liberal, and he's doubtful that any amount of "nurture" could turn him into a conservative. But he said liberals could learn a lot from conservatives, specifically about loyalty to leaders and to their cause. Like conservatives, some liberals may find themselves at odds with the scientific consensus on some issues. Which issues, specifically? Mooney pointed to hard-line stands against hydraulic fracturing (a.k.a. fracking), nuclear power, childhood vaccination and genetically modified organisms.

"Liberals have wanted to believe that if the system were just fair, then everybody would agree with us," he said. "That's a liberal fantasy. Actually, it turns out that liberalism is not the only way of being. ... Liberals should realize that not everybody's like them, and liberals' instincts in politics could be exactly what you don't want to do."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In a packed forum on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, the parents of Trayvon Martin found support among members of Congress who turned the death of their 17-year-old's son into a rallying cry against racial profiling.

Martin's parents spoke briefly before a Democrats-only congressional panel as cameras clicked noisily in front of them. Many in the crowd, which filled the seats and lined the walls, strained to catch a glimpse of the parents whose son was shot and killed Feb. 26 in a Sanford, Fla. gated community.

"Trayvon was our son, but Trayvon is your son," Sybrina Fulton, Martin's mother, told the panel. "A lot of people can relate to our situation and it breaks their heart like it breaks our heart."

Martin's father, Tracy Martin, thanked "everyone who is holding the legacy of Trayvon."

"Trayvon is sadly missed and we will continue to fight for justice for him," said Tracy Martin, who wore a weary look.

During the two-hour forum, the lawmakers and witnesses openly criticized the police investigation of the shooting and the failure of police to arrest the admitted shooter, George Zimmerman. Those attending the hearing applauded the couple when Deborah Ramirez, a law professor at Northeastern University School of Law in Boston, praised the parents' "dignity and grace in the face of this tragedy" and said they were an "inspiration to all."

Zimmerman, 28, has said he acted in self-defense. Federal and state officials are investigating.

"It is very important that we have independent eyes on this situation," said Rep. Corrine Brown, a Democrat whose district includes Sanford. "I am hoping we take this as a teachable moment. I am looking forward to how the Justice Department handles their independent investigation."

At a news conference after the forum, Martin and Fulton renewed their calls for justice in their son's death. When asked whether he thought his son's death was a hate crime, Martin said: "Yes, I believe he was racially profiled." The family's attorney, Benjamin Crump, said racial profiling also was a factor in the way the police conducted their investigation.

Several members of Congress have called for the case to be investigated as a hate crime. Another attorney for the Martin family, Daryl D. Parks, has said that statements from Department of Justice officials in a meeting with Martin's parents make clear that getting hate crime charges is going to be a challenge.

Martin was black. Zimmerman's father is white and his mother is Hispanic.

Tuesday's session was not an official House Judiciary hearing, so no votes or formal action could occur. The committee's ranking Democrat, Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, said the meeting was intended to be a discussion of racial profiling, hate crime laws and Florida's Stand Your Ground law, which eliminated a person's duty to retreat when threatened with serious bodily harm or death.

But much of the discussion revolved around criticism of the police investigation, the failure to arrest Zimmerman, Zimmerman's actions, and reassurances to Martin's parents that "we got your back," as Rep. Andre Carson, D-Indiana, put it.

"We see so clearly a case of racial profiling," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, who mentioned he is also dealing with the New York City police force's stop-and-frisk policies.

The parents drew many onlookers who lined a wall and waited for the meeting's end for a chance at a glimpse of the parents.

At a news conference following the forum, Fulton had to pause and fight back emotions before telling reporters she was looking to the congressional members for help. Asked about a a bounty issued by the Black Panthers for Zimmerman, Fulton said "we want this done peaceful. We want you to protest. We want you to rally. We want this done peaceful."

The Orlando Sentinel has reported that Zimmerman told police that he and Martin exchanged words before the teen punched him in the nose and began banging his head on the ground. He says he cried out for help. Martin's parents said their son made the pleas for help.

Witness accounts differ, and 911 recordings in which the voices are heard are not clear.

The parents' attorney, Ben Crump, said the negative reports that are being leaked about Martin are making Zimmerman look like the victim and Trayvon as the suspect.

Martin's parents initiated the campaign to draw national attention to their son's death with an online petition calling for Zimmerman's arrest. Their son's death quickly caught fire through social media and then drew national media focus. His parents have since attended rallies in Florida and appeared on national television shows.

Earlier Tuesday, House Speaker John Boehner said "clearly what happened is in fact a tragedy," but he steered clear of calling for Zimmerman's arrest as some lawmakers have done. "It's being investigated by state and federal officials, which I think is appropriate," said Boehner, R-Ohio.

The recent improvements in the job market have given us reason to hope the economy is finally?on the mend.

But after five years of struggles, here?s a sobering reminder of how far we still have to go: Nearly two in 10?American men in the prime of their life still are not?working.

Nearly 83 percent of men ages 25 to 54 ? traditionally the core of the nation?s workforce ? were working in February, according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That sounds like a lot, and the employment to population ratio for prime-age men has been improving steadily in recent months. But it?s still significantly lower than five years ago, when about 88 percent of prime-age men were working.

It?s also a far cry from the 1940s through the 1970s, where more than 90 percent of men in that age group were usually employed.

?This is prime-age men, which is a group that, you know, should be working at very high levels,? noted Harry Holzer, a professor at Georgetown University and an expert in labor market data.

Of course, some of those men aren?t working because they are doing other things, such as going to school, or they are disabled or retired. Still, even among men of that age group who are actively seeking work, it?s tough out there.

The unemployment rate for 25- to 54-year-old men was 7.1 percent in February, which is an improvement of 3 percentage points from a high of 10.1 percent in the fall of 2009. Still, that?s about double what it was five years ago, before the recession began.

There?s also plenty of evidence that even as prime-age men are getting back to work, they aren?t necessarily getting?a good job, or one they want.

There are currently about 45.9 million 25- to 54-year-old men with a full-time job, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics data. That?s actually lower than during the height of the recession, which ran from December 2007 to June of 2009.

SmartMoney compared that data to the entire population and noted that, by that measure, just 75 percent of prime-age men currently have a full time job.

Holzer noted that the data on full-time workers is a less reliable indicator of long-term trends since it isn?t adjusted for seasonal work variations. Still, he said that while some men may choose to work part-time so they can go back to school or take on more childcare duties, it?s clear some men are not able to find enough work.

??Relatively few prime age men choose to work part-time,? he said.

Holzer said there has been some real progress for working men in recent months, but a look at long-term trends shows that we still have far to go. He?s particularly concerned about working-age men who do not have a higher education and have been hit hard by cuts in fields such as manufacturing and construction.

?They were having a hard time even before the recession hit, and they really got slammed by the recession,? he said. ?That?s a problematic group that we need to think about more seriously.?

Vatican: Pope's Cuba trip should help democracy

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican's No. 2 has dismissed suggestions that Cuba's Communist government could exploit Pope Benedict XVI's upcoming trip as a propaganda tool, saying the visit should help promote democracy on the island.

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican's secretary of state, said he expects an outpouring of support for the pope because he is the head of the Catholic Church and that the visit will only make things better for the Cuban church.

"I don't believe the visit will be exploited by the government," Bertone told the Turin daily La Stampa in an interview published Thursday. "In fact, I think the government and Cuban people will do their utmost to welcome the pope and show him the esteem and trust that the leader of the Catholic Church deserves."

Benedict, 84, leaves Friday for a six-day trip that will take him first to Mexico, then to Cuba on March 26. It's Benedict's first trip to Spanish-speaking Latin America, and Pope John Paul II's shadow will be looming large, given his five visits to Mexico, which claimed the Polish pope as its own, and his historic 1998 trip to Cuba.

For starters, there's the question of a papal meeting with Fidel Castro. When John Paul visited, Castro shed his trademark olive-green fatigues for a suit and tie to greet the pope at the airport and they later met privately.

The 85-year-old revolutionary leader has since been replaced as president by his brother Raul Castro, who will handle the official protocol greetings and meetings this time around. While a Benedict-Fidel meeting isn't on the official agenda, it's widely expected.

Cuba's single-party, Communist government never outlawed religion, but it expelled priests and closed religious schools upon Fidel Castro's takeover of Cuba in 1959. Tensions eased in the early 1990s when the government removed references to atheism in the constitution and let believers of all faiths join the Communist Party.

John Paul's 1998 visit further warmed relations.

But problems remain. Despite years of lobbying, the church has virtually no access to state-run radio or television, is not allowed to administer schools, and has not been granted permission to build new places of worship. The island of 11.2 million has just 361 priests, many of them non-Cubans. Before 1959 there were 700 priests for a population of 6 million.

Bertone cited the school and building bans in the interview, saying it was an issue that had to be resolved.

"But after 14 years (since John Paul's visit) ... there's no doubt that the current visit of Pope Benedict XVI will help the process of development toward democracy and will open new spaces for the church's presence and activity," Bertone was quoted as saying.

In an interview earlier this week with Vatican Radio, Bertone spoke about the Mexico leg of the trip, saying Benedict would be bringing a message of hope particularly to young Mexicans confronting the country's violent drug war.

He said the pope wants to urge young Mexicans to not be discouraged or be taken in by easy ways to make money but to instead "feel committed to making a solid, honest society."

More than 47,000 people have died in drug violence nationwide since President Felipe Calderon began a crackdown on drug cartels in December 2006.

Bertone also voiced opposition to abortion and gay marriage, both of which have been legalized in Mexico City by the leftist Democratic Revolution Party. Bertone said he expects the pope to refer to these issues, repeating the commandment "Thou shalt not kill" and church teaching that says marriage exists solely between man and woman.

Benedict's main activity in Mexico is an outdoor Mass on Sunday in Silao's Bicentennial Park that is expected to draw more than 350,000 people and will mark the 200th anniversary of the region's independence.

On Monday, he flies to Santiago de Cuba to mark the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the image of the Virgin of Charity of Cobre, Cuba's patron. He arrives in Havana on Tuesday and celebrates Mass in the capital's famed Revolution Plaza the following day before returning to Rome.

Former Polish President Lech Walesa, whose Solidarity movement that helped topple communism was inspired by John Paul's 1979 visit to Poland, said he believes Benedict's visit to Cuba will "open a new chapter in Cuba's history."

Walesa's office said Thursday that his hopes were expressed in a letter sent to Benedict earlier this month in which Walesa said he hoped the trip would force Cuban authorities to listen to the will of the people.

The New York Mets' owners scored an early-season victory Monday, stabilizing the club's financial future in a deal with a trustee for Bernard Madoff's fraud victims that requires them to pay millions less than they might have ? and lifts a dark cloud from a team whose dismal play seemed to mirror its misfortune in the owner's box.

Mets CEO Fred Wilpon and team President Saul Katz, co-majority owners, emerged smiling from a Manhattan federal courthouse after a judge announced the agreement, which makes it likely they'll pay much less than the agreed-upon $162 million, if any at all; guarantees they will owe nothing until the end of four years; and averts a high-profile civil trial.

"Now I guess I can smile, maybe I can take a day off, but I can't wait to get back to our businesses, which I love," Wilpon, sporting dark sunglasses, said outside court as he pledged to rejoin the Mets on Tuesday at spring training in Florida. He stood with Katz, who rested his hand on Wilpon's shoulder under a sunny sky.

After speaking, Wilpon gave a nod to the sagging faith some have had in recent years with owners who seemed mired in accusations that they knew Madoff was up to no good but kept silent because they were making lots of money on their investment.

"Stick with us," he said.

In a lawsuit that demanded $1 billion from the Mets owners, Picard said Wilpon and Katz had meetings with Madoff in his office at least once a year, a privilege few investors enjoyed, and that Katz at times spoke directly with Madoff at least once a day.

Madoff is serving a 150-year prison sentence after revealing in December 2008 that he cheated thousands of investors of roughly $20 billion for years.

The judge noted the end of acrimony as he read a document that promised neither side will disparage the other or the agreement and that Picard will no longer accuse the Mets owners of being "willfully blind," a legal term central to the civil trial the deal eliminated. The litigation could have forced the team's owners to pay up to $383 million.

"All I have to say is, love is wonderful," U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff said, smiling.

The deal was shaped so that the team's owners could owe much less than the $162 million they received in fictitious profits in the six years before Madoff's fraud was revealed.

The agreement calls for the sum to be reduced by money that would otherwise be paid for $178 million in losses claimed on behalf of dozens of accounts held in the name of defendants in the action against Sterling Partners, a business entity that includes the Mets owners, along with real estate, sports media and private equity interests.

David J. Sheehan, the lawyer for trustee Irving Picard, told the judge that $10 million in losses by Sterling Partners that was recovered by the trustee was already set for disbursement, an amount that would reduce the Mets owners' debt to $152 million.

The trustee says he has recovered 52 percent, or $9 billion, of claimed principal losses by all Madoff investors. More than $6 billion more has been identified but not yet secured.

Malik Yusef: Peace Is the Gift We Give Ourselves

On the anniversary of my man Biggie's transformation (R.I.P Notorious B.I.G), "South by Southwest" kicked off its 26th yearly festival, executing its agenda perfectly. Celebrities of all walks of life marched with no name too big, nor color code unheard from. The melting pot of music, film and interactive conferencing was ripe and in full speed. Right upon my arrival, I realized that in some ways we have all been to the Promised Land. What we need is to better understand it, and properly care for it at the same time.

The turn-out was amazing! Timberland appeared at Perez Hilton's spot, Theophilus London performed at Rachel Ray's BBQ, 50 Cent rocked at Austin Music Hall, the Boss (Bruce Springsteen), Eminem, Jay-Z, and even my family Kanye West came through on this real G.O.O.D music thing. The racial roadblocks at every level were dismantled and rendered non-important. What I saw was three generations of humanity which once could not drink from the same water fountain, now living the theory of "one mic." My "vision was set" (as my man DJ 3rd Eye would say) on the young men and women from the inner cities who were now living their dreams by going from what was once a lack of resources directly into co-operative economics. The day-to-day grind and tense faces that normally wore "ill grills," were now painted with Mona Lisa smiles. For the first time, I can honestly say that outside of the family I saw people who I'd want to work with.

Having seen the "gerbil wheel" effect that big corporate radio has laid out on our artistry, by playing the same songs over and over, SXSW put on what I would call a real musical rotation. The independent media and bloggers took full advantage of SXSW having brought so much talent in one place by providing a voice for a new generation of hip hop artists allowing them to take their rightful place in the industry. They had gotten beyond exchanging information on their fashions and what they were wearing, while lyrically taking freedom beyond the same old verbal slavery. Information is power, and I can honestly say that I saw it being shared amongst the masses at SXSW.

There was a super increase in corporate sponsorship. Big business laid out their brands by the hundreds. Yet, in all these different structures, there was peace. Every talent and participant that came through extended this enjoyable peace. It was afforded to us by our music and given to us by ourselves. This kind of peace can only be effective when we are balanced in our dealings with each other. SXSW set the scales just right! Next year, I plan on bringing all of our movements to the table including "Bridge 1018" and What is Beautiful Never Dies. Consider the G.O.O.D. music family tickets already bought. As the saying goes, 'No Justice, No beats, SXSW kept the peace!' One love. Shout outs to MC Hammer and the band Zzaje; music + movement= money !

Wolfpack erase early deficit, hang on to top Hoyas

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? It's been a long time since North Carolina State was mentioned in the same breath with the elite programs in the nation ? let alone its own state.

Now, a new coach and a new attitude have the Wolfpack faithful harkening back to the glory days of David Thompson and Jim Valvano.

Lorenzo Brown hit three free throws in the final 10.6 seconds and North Carolina State returned to the round of 16 with a 66-63 upset of third-seeded Georgetown in the NCAA tournament on Sunday.

"When I went to Alabama as the head coach at the age of 33, John Wooden told me one time, he said, 'Coach, don't give them too much too fast. They might start expecting that every year,'" first-year Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried said with a grin.

Then, with impeccable timing, he added: "Well, we failed in that category already."

The Wolfpack (24-12) will play Purdue or Kansas on Friday in St. Louis.

A lowly 11th seed coming in, they had to survive a furious comeback by the Hoyas (24-9) that ended when Jason Clark's hurried 3-point attempt from the right wing was off the mark at the buzzer.

"We pushed the ball up the court, tried to get a last shot," Clark said, his eyes brimming with tears. "I felt like it had a chance, but it didn't."

It's a return to the big stage for a program that has been lost in the rather large shadows cast by neighboring powers Duke and North Carolina. The Wolfpack won national titles in 1974 with Thompson and in 1983 on Lorenzo Charles' dramatic last-second putback of Dereck Whittenburg's wild shot, leading to coach Valvano's memorable celebration.

But maybe the new Wolfpack have turned a corner.

"We always talk about how we have such a great history at NC State," Gottfried said. "But it's also time to build some new history."

C.J. Williams, Scott Wood and C.J. Leslie each had 14 points, and Brown added 12 for the Wolfpack, who earned their first trip to the round of 16 since 2005.

The Wolfpack's defense spurred a 12-0 first-half run that included seven points by Williams and helped turn an eight-point deficit into a three-point halftime lead.

They pushed the advantage to 11 in the second half before Georgetown (24-9), despite deep foul trouble for center and top assist man Henry Sims, came clawing back.

The Hoyas, riding the shooting of Hollis Thompson, who had 23 points, drew to 63-61 before freshman Otto Porter missed a 15-foot jumper under pressure with 14 seconds left.

Brown, a 74-percent shooter at the line, made two foul shots with 10.6 seconds left for a 65-61 lead. Clark, who finished with 10 points, then went the length of the court for a layup before Brown was fouled again with 4.6 seconds left. He hit the first but missed the second, and the Hoyas raced down court for a potential tying 3.

They got a great look, with Clark, defended by Williams, stopping and getting off a rushed shot that was wide of the mark.

"I was just praying it wasn't going in," Williams said. And it didn't.

It set off a wild celebration among the Wolfpack players. Three teammates hefted Brown to their shoulders and carried him across the floor, while guard Alex Johnson popped his jersey and yelled to the roaring North Carolina State faithful, "We back baby! We're going to the Sweet 16!"

It was another bitter disappointment for Georgetown, also a legendary program trying to reclaim a glowing legacy. The Hoyas were knocked out in their first game in each of the previous two NCAA tournaments, and the players said they had finally shed the stigma of those defeats with a 74-59 victory over Belmont on Friday.

They also had put aside a strange year that began with the team attacked by the crowd and opposing players in an exhibition game in China.

"This team, in spite of whatever downs we've had and losses like today, has been a really special group," coach John Thompson III said.

This continues to be a special year for the Wolfpack, a team that no one thought would be dancing this late in the year.

Well, almost no one.

"One of the first things I said to coach Gottfried when I met him, I said, 'I don't want this to be a rebuilding year. I don't want to just play to get better. I think we've got the talent and the pieces that we could be a dominant team,'" Wood said.

Brown couldn't wipe the smile off his face after the game.

"You never know what to expect in this tournament," he said, sounding far more sage than a sophomore should. "A lot of great teams went down a couple of days ago. And we're just out here playing our best. And Coach is a believer in us and we believe in ourselves."
